30 Day TV Challenge: Day #29

Day 29. Current TV show obsession.

Once Upon a Time (2011-)

Once Upon A TimeSo I’m not sure how to talk about my obsession with this show without everyone thinking I’m completely crazy! I’ve always been a TV fan but I’ve never obsessed about a show like I do with this one. I will say that I’ve had times this season where I’ve been disappointed with where the show is going, but I always bounce back to loving the show. The main part of my obsession would have to start with my obsession with Disney. These classic fairytales are stories that I still love no matter how old I get. I’ve always said that I will always be a kid at heart. The stories here though are being told for an older audience (yet I bet it’s something that younger kids can enjoy as well). I’ve always been fascinated with the villains and here we really get a chance to know why they are evil. Basically how they lost their loves. The first season really started my obsession though. I loved trying to figure out the clues as to who the characters were–who their fairytale counterparts are. I do like to point out that I figured out at a very early point that August was Pinocchio! The other part of the obsession comes from the couples that are on this show. Snow White and Prince Charming are just so perfect. Belle and Rumpelstiltskin are an interesting couple to watch. I just find myself really rooting for them! And as I’ve pointed out before, Emma and Hook will eventually become a thing. Their dance has been fun to watch though. At the heart of this show though is that it is one big dysfunctional family. Snow and Charming finding Emma/Emma finding her parents is a touching story. I find that each week I’m hoping for more and more parent/child interaction between them. Ok I feel like this is getting long so I’ll stop but there is so much more that I could talk about! I just love this show!!

What’s your current TV show obsession??

Spring Breakers…WTF?!

Spring BreakersIt’s been two days since I’ve seen this movie and I still don’t think I’ve been able to wrap my head around it. I just don’t get it. I don’t understand how this movie got made…especially with this cast. I don’t understand who would say to these girls that being a part of this project is good for their careers. Maybe it’s just me but I just really didn’t like it. I guess I can understand that it would be appealing to make a movie that glorifies and horrifies the ritual that spring break as become in our culture. What I don’t understand is how people think this is that movie. To be completely honest the only thing I took away from the movie was “spring break…spring break forever” a line that James Franco’s character repeats about a million times. So many lines and shots were done multiple times throughout the movie that it really seems like it was just a Girls Gone Wild episode drawn out into hours of my life that I’ll never get back.

WARNING SPOILERS!

I will admit that my reasoning for seeing this movie was the cast. Even now that I’m an adult, I still enjoy some of the Disney projects that Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens and Ashely Benson have been a part of. I was curious to see these girls try to break the contraints of their Disney “good-girl” vibes. Especially with the amount of press that this film seems to be getting, I think I was given the totally wrong impression. Let’s start with the fact that Selena plays a girl named Faith who is your typical good girl. She just wants a change of pace from the everyday life that she seems to be stuck in. Besides the fact that she doesn’t partake in the original robbery that funds their little adventure, she is the only one that gets out of there before things get bad. Yes she “parties” and ends up in jail with the rest of them but honestly I don’t see how much this really sheds her good girl persona. Also she leaves the movie halfway through and never comes back. Moving on to Vanessa and Ashley… These two sure shed their good girl personas quickly. I think the only thing that wasn’t seen of these two was actual nudity (only the fourth girl who is the only unknown here goes to that length). They just didn’t make any sense to me. Especially in the end. I think that’s my hardest part understanding these girls. There was no resolution.

I do have to give major props to James Franco though. I’m not usually a fan (although I loved him as the Wizard in Oz the Great and Powerful). Besides being completely ridiculous and making everyone believe he was KFed, he delivered an intriguing performance that actually gave the movie something a little more than just Girls Gone Wild. He’s the comic relief of the movie which is disturbing for the fact that he’s into everything bad. By far the best part of the movie was when he was playing the piano and singing Britney Spears’ Everytime. I don’t know if the Britney Spears bits were intentional but it made me think back to when Crossroads came out. At the time she was the “good-girl” trying to grow up. Even though that movie tackles some pretty serious topics that made parents uncomfortable with letting their young daughters see it, there’s no comparison here. There’s much more disturbing and horrifying things in this movie that none of the young fans should be able to see.

30 Day Movie Challenge: Day #23

Day 23. Movie That Inspires You

OMG so many movies to choose from in this category! I find that most movies have some sort of inspiration to them so it really just depends on the mood you’re in.

  • Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit (1993)–The sisters come back to Delores’s show to get her back as Sister Mary Clarence to teach music to a group of students in their parochial school which is doomed for closure. One of the girls, who is the most talented of the bunch, is forbidden to sing by her mother, although the choir has made it to the state championship. A group of stereotypical incompetent monks tries to stop them. Starring Whoopi Goldberg, Kathy Najimy, Maggie Smith and Lauryn Hill. It’s a great story that teaches kids to follow their dreams and that it only takes one person to inspire many. I absolutely love this movie!! Especially all the songs. They have wonderful voices!

  • Mulan (1998)–To save her father from death in the army, a Chinese maiden secretly goes in his place and becomes one of China’s greatest heroes in the process. Starring the voice of Eddie Murphy as Mushu. Way to go Disney for bringing in the girl power. Mulan finally breaks the barrier for princesses. She doesn’t need a prince in shinning armor to come save her. She’s gonna be doing all the saving herself. LET’S GET DOWN TO BUSINESS.

  • Pay It Forward (2000)–A young boy attempts to make the world a better place after his teacher gives him that chance. Starring Kevin Spacey, Haley Joel Osment and Helen Hunt. I have a love/hate relationship with this movie. It’s just too damn sad. But the idea that if you reach out to three people and that chain continues, is an inspiring one. The world really can be a better place.

  • Remember the Titans (2000)–The true story of a newly appointed African-American coach and his high school team on their first season as a racially integrated unit. Starring Denzel Washington, Will Patton, Wood Harris and Ryan Hurst. It’s a great story about young people putting aside their differences and realizing their similarities. It’s moving to know that things like this really did happen and that people do truly stand up for what they believe in.

  • Soul Surfer (2011)–A teenage surfer girl summons the courage to go back into the ocean after losing an arm in a shark attack. Starring AnnaSophia Robb, Dennis Quaid, Helen Hunt, Lorraine Nicholson, Kevin Sorbo and Carrie Underwood. The real story of Bethany Hamilton is a truly moving one that plays out so well in this movie. I figure if a girl who lost her arm is able to do so much and help so many people, I could do great things too.

What movie inspires you??

Day 7. Favorite Animated Feature

I know I’m 22 years old, but sometimes I wish I was still 5. I’m obsessed with Disney movies…always have been. I would love to work in animation at some point in my life.

  • Up (2009)–By tying thousands of balloons to his home, 78-year-old Carl sets out to fulfill his lifelong dream to see the wilds of South America. Russell, a wilderness explorer 70 years younger, inadvertently becomes a stowaway. This is my favorite Pixar film–the characters are so real that you forget that they are animated. But the best part of this movie is that they can tell one of the best love stories with almost no words. It gets me every time.

  • Monsters, Inc. (2001)–Monsters generate their city’s power by scaring children, but they are terribly afraid themselves of being contaminated by children, so when one enters Monstropolis, top scarer Sulley finds his wold disrupted. Seriously I think this is one of the best stories Pixar has come up with! So simple yet amazing!! Whenever I hear Billy Crystal’s voice I picture Mike Wazowski!!

  • Anastasia (1997)–The only surviving child of the Russian Royal Family hooks up with two con men while the undead Rasputin seeks her death. Starring Meg Ryan, John Cusack, Kelsey Grammer, Christopher Lloyd, Hank Azaria, Bernadette Peters, Kirsten Dunst and Angela Lansbury. Besides having the best cast for an animated movie, it also has some of the best music. I still have some of the songs on my playlists! I’m in love with this movie!! Oh and I call my dog Barok because she looks like him! Haha

  • Lady and the Tramp (1955)–The romantic tale of a sheltered uptown Cocker Spaniel dog and a streetwise downtown Mutt. This is by far my all time favorite Disney movie. I love dogs!! I’ve always wanted someone to get me a Lady for Christmas like Jim Dear got Darling.

  • The Little Mermaid (1989)–A mermaid princess makes a faustian bargain with an unscrupulous seahag in order to meet a human prince on land. Ariel is my favorite Disney princess and Ursula may be my favorite Disney character ever…well after Eeyore.

What are your favorite animated films??
