Craft Time: DIY Candle Repurposing

I’m a very crafty person and lately I’ve been looking for some fun and quick crafts to do. I’ve also been burning candles frequently so I find that I have a good amount of leftover glass containers. I’ve seen a ton of different tutorials online but I figured I would post an easy step-by-step tutorial here.

What you’ll need:

  • A finished candle (I would suggest a Slatkin & Co. from Bath and Body Works. These candles usually burn out with about half an inch of wax left.)
  • Mod Podge in a matte finish
  • A paint brush
  • Glitter (I like the Martha Stewart brand)
  • Computer paper
  • A butter knife

Directions:

  1. Once you have a candle that is burnt out, peel off the front label. Just make sure that the candle isn’t hot anymore.
  2. Place the candle in the freezer for at least an hour. This helps set the wax and makes it easier to take out.
  3. After an hour, take the candle and with a butter knife, stab the wax so it creates a break. Do this multiple times in a few different places. Now you can pry the chunks of wax out with your knife or your hands.
  4. Now that all the wax is out, there may or may not be metal wicks glued to the bottom. Sometimes these come out with the wax but if they don’t, fill the candle with really hot water. This helps loosen the glue and then you can either scratch them out with a knife or your fingernails.
  5. Clean the container out well and remove the bottom label. After it’s dry, lay out the computer paper under the container so you don’t make a mess.
  6. Using the paint brush, cover the inside of the container with a light, even layer of mod podge. Tip: do this step more quickly just so the glue doesn’t have time to dry.
  7. With wet glue, dump in a generous amount of glitter into the container. Then maneuver the glitter around to cover the entire inside of the container.  Don’t worry if you spill the glitter while doing this–actually when the entire thing is covered in glitter, turn it upside-down and tap out any loose glitter onto the computer paper. You can funnel this excess glitter back into its container.
  8. Now you just need to let it dry. The container will look more on the white side at first but as the glue dries and the glitter sets, the color of the glitter will be the end color.

Now you have a glittery new decoration to add some razzle dazzle to your room! I’ve made some of mine into a holder for makeup brushes and some for my jewelry. Let me know what you use yours for! Happy crafting!!

30 Day Movie Challenge: Day #22

Day 22. Movie You Wish You Could Live In

This category was hard because I’ve already used a lot of movies that I would want to live in in other categories. Here are a few others that I would find interesting to live in.

  • The Wizard of Oz (1939)–Dorothy Gale is swept away to a magical land in a tornado and embarks on a quest to see the Wizard who can help her return home. Starring Judy Garland, Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr and Jack Haley. With all the magic and wonderful characters who wouldn’t want to live in the Land of Oz?? Plus I want to live in a world where randomly breaking out into song is a normal occurrence!

  • Accepted (2006)–A high school slacker who’s rejected by every school he applies to opts to create his own institution of higher learning, the South Harmon Institute of Technology, on a rundown piece os property near his hometown. Starring Justin Long, Jonah Hill and Blake Lively. This just seems like the most fun college ever!

  • Monte Carlo (2011)–Three young women vacationing in Paris find themselves whisked away to Monte Carlo after one of the girls is mistaken for a British heiress. Starring Selena Gomez, Leighton Meester, Katie Cassidy and Cory Monteith. Who wouldn’t want to be mistaken for a princess and get to play dress up in some fabulous clothes…and shoes!!

  • Star Trek (2009)–The brash James T. Kirk tries to live up to his father’s legacy with Mr. Spock keeping him in check as a vengeful, time-traveling Romulan creates black holes to destroy the Federation one planet at a time. Directed by J.J. Abrams. Starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Leonard Nimoy, Eric Bana, Karl Urban and Zoe Saldana. I want to hang out in space with these two beautiful guys.

  • National Treasure (2004)–A treasure hunter is in hot pursuit of a mythical treasure that has been passed down for centuries, while his employer turned enemy is onto the same path that he’s on. Starring Nicolas Cage, Diane Kruger, Justin Bartha and Jon Voight. I love scavenger hunts! Living a real one could be really awesome!!

What movie do you wish you could live in??
